My Background

Originally from Montréal, Canada, I joined the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences (University of Birmingham) in 2002 after completing my PhD at the University of Western Ontario. As a competitive ice skater, I first became interested in sport psychology training and developed an appreciation for the mental side of sport. After further studies and gathering more than ten years of professional coaching experience, I now research and lecture about the applied aspects of exercise and sport psychology to undergraduate students and supervises Masters and PhD students.

  1. Dear Dr. Cumming,
I am a student, a Junior, at NPHS currently working on a project for my course in Science Research, and I am writing to you in the hope that you or anyone you know might be able to provide me with a little guidance or mentoring with my research.

I am primarily interested in the study of movement (I am passionate about dance) and how it is affected by human psychology. While I am very flexible in my choice of my specific area of study and experimentation, I was fascinated by my research last year as a Sophomore in the subject of proprioception, especially by the theory that dancers are psychologically more able to discern the position of their bodies in space than non-dancers.
I would only ask for a small amount of time from my academic “mentor” to review and comment on this work in progress, either in person, Skype, or by phone.

    Thank you,

    1. Hi Neve. Thanks for your inquiry & great to hear you are interested in psychology & dance. If you send me an email (J.Cumming@Bham.ac.uk), I can suggest some names of suitable mentors within the topic you are interested in exploring.

  3. Dear Dr. Cumming,

    How are you?

I just read your blog about the MIQ. I was hoping to get my hands on a copy including the user’s manual. I have just completed the MTQ accreditation and would also like to use the MIQ with clients. Could I please trouble you for that when you have time? I am a sports coach studying a bachelor of psychology and it has been nice to stumble across your page.

    Kind Regards
